Support the cause
Thanks to the generous gifts of donors like you the Myeloproliferative Disorders-Research Consortium (MPD-RC) is able to continue to search for a cure of Myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs). Together, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of those who suffer from this life-threatening disease.
Gifts to the MPD-RC directly fund MPD research. One hundred percent (100%) of every dollar contributed supports more than 60 researchers at over 15 research institutions in USA, Italy, Germany and Canada. All non-research costs associated with the Research Program are paid through the National Cancer Institute's general fund.
MPDs include Essential Thrombocythemia (ET), Polycythemia Vera (PV) and Chronic Idiopathic Myelofibrosis (MF). They are are classified as orphan diseases, which is by definition of the National Institute of Health, any disease that affects less than 200,000 people in the United States at any given time. Nevertheless studies currently underway suggest a much higher incidence.
Because of the supposedly small populations affected by these diseases, pharmaceutical companies and biotech companies rarely pursue treatments. For many years medical research into the cause and treatments of MPDs had been limited. The last full scale medical research study in US, the Polycythemia Study Group (PVSG), was completed over 30 years ago and showed the benefit of cytoreductive therapy. After that landmark study no relevant, large-scale randomized trial has been published until 2004 when an European collaborative clinical trial, the ECLAP study, demonstrated the benefit of low-dose aspirin in PV. Many important medical decisions for treatment of the MPDs are based on information from these studies, this strongly suggesting the need for more current research.
To improve the treatment of the MPDs biological and clinical data needs to be gathered to allow evidence-based medical decisions and only collaborative networks of research including experts in the various fields of MPDs can provide a real fruitful ground.
The MPD-RC is an international, multi-institutional no profit consortium whose primary goal is to search for new medical treatments to cure and improve the quality of life of people effected with MPD diseases. The MPD-RC comprises basic scientists and clinicians from US and Europe with the understanding that clinical and basic research in this area could not flourish in isolation, and that effort in each area of investigation is critical for advances to occur in this field of study.
